What is Delta-8 THC?
Updated: Jul 29, 2021
Delta-8 THC is a cannabis compound that has become increasingly more popular because of its similarity to delta-9 THC; which is the main component in cannabis that gets you high.
Delta-9 THC is known for its effects which cause euphoria, happiness, sedation, symptom relief, and much more. Although Delta-9 THC is the most common form of THC found in medical marijuana, there is the very similar Delta-8 THC; which had the same effects of Delta-9 THC, but is much less potent.
The legality of Delta-8 THC is hazy due to the fact that it can be extracted from both Hemp and Cannabis. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp to be grown and used for extractions all over the United States, making Delta-8 THC legal in states where Delta-9 THC is illegal. Nearly all delta-8 THC on the market today is manufactured from hemp-derived CBD, which makes it, in theory at least, part of a federally legal chain of origin.
What's the Difference Between Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC?
Delta-8 THC like Delta-9 THC binds the bodies endocannabinoid system, which causes you to feel high. Both Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC have similar chemical structures, which are double bonded. It is the double bond of the structures that is thought to produce the intoxicating effects of THC that make you feel high.
However, the two chemical compounds are different in the placement of the double bond. Each of the cannabinoids have a chain of carbon atoms, but Delta-8 has its double bond on the 8th carbon and Delta-9 has its double bond on the 9th carbon.
Delta-8 THC bonds to the endocannabinoid system slightly different way than Delta-9 THC because of where the double bond. This is what is thought to make Delta-8 THC less potent.
